Why exercising outside is a game changer

Over the past few weeks, here in Bristol we've had some unbelievably good weather, and it got me thinking. One of my favourite places in Bristol, both to train clients and walk my dog is Clifton Village and the Downs, also in Clifton. You will regularly see people exercising here, especially on the Downs.
But in a world where we spend most of our time indoors - working, studying and scrolling - it surprises me that there aren't more using this excellent space. Taking your workout outside can be a refreshing and transformative shift.
Exercising outdoors offers a double dose of benefits: physical activity and nature therapy. Natural sunlight boosts vitamin D levels, which supports immune function and mood. The changing terrain of a park or trail challenges your body more than a treadmill ever could, improving balance, coordination, and muscle engagement. Plus, outdoor settings often reduce perceived exertion - meaning you might push harder without feeling it as much. Believe me, you'll sweat way more in a gym than you will outside.
But it's not just about the body. Being in nature has been linked to lower stress, improved mood, and even enhanced creativity. Whether it's a brisk walk, a jog or some higher intensity training, getting outside can help clear your mind and reconnect you with the world around you.
Of course there are huge benfits to indoor training too and I work with clients in both indoor and outdoor settings, with great success for each. However, it's all about balance and if you never take your training outside, next time you think about working out, consider swapping the gym for some fresh air. Your body and your brain will thank you.
